CBS BS/MS Student Rachel Gur-Arie is Interning with CSPO in D.C.!

Rachel Gur-Arie, an accelerated Master's student studying Biology and Society with an emphasis on Bioscience Ethics, Policy, and Law, is interning with the Consortium for Science, Policy, and Outcomes (CSPO) in Washington, DC this summer. CSPO , a science policy think tank established by ASU, works with Congress and other organizations to analyze the societal effects of scientific work and progress.

Gur-Arie is interning under Mahmud Farooque, the associate director of CSPO's DC office, who focuses on improving the learning and practice of decision making and innovation policy. Under Farooque, Gur-Arie will be developing a curriculum for CSPO's Science, Policy, and Citizenship Program to be established in the fall or spring in both DC and Phoenix high schools. The Science, Policy, and Citizenship Program is an outreach program which engages with high school students about current science policy issues. The curriculum that Gur-Arie will be developing focuses on the bioethical and societal implications of the intersection Obama's BRAIN initiative with nanotechnology and human enhancement.

In addition to her work at CSPO, Gur-Arie is working on her honors thesis, which focuses on undergraduate student knowledge and perception of influenza. She plans to explore DC by eating her way throughout the city and attending as many events as possible.
