CBS and ASU at 150 years of NAS

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the most prestigious scientific institution in the United States. In honor of this auspicious occasion, the NAS coordinated a two-day Sackler Colloquium, titled “The NAS at 150”, at their Washington, D.C. headquarters. The Colloquium brought together established historians of science, famous scientists, and policy-makers to discuss many aspects of the history of the NAS, including its role in science and science policy advising.

President’s and Regents’ Professor, and the Director of the Center for Biology and Society, Jane Maienschein, was invited to act as a panelist for the “Biology and Public Policy” session. Maienschein provided insightful feedback and commentary on a lecture given by University of Pennsylvania historian of science, Ruth Schwartz Cowan. To view the panel discussion, click here. Also in attendance were two current CBS PhD candidates, Erica O’Neil and Kate MacCord, as well as two former CBS grads, Matt Shindell and Lijing Jiang.
